S.O.S. !!

“A wise bear always keeps a marmalade sandwich in his hat in case of emergency!”
— Paddington Bear (Michael Bond)

Now, I’m in no way advocating for serving marmalade sandwiches on your wedding morning, but I am suggesting that being prepared is always a wise idea — especially on your big day!

As the owner of a wedding venue back in the beautiful Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, I’ve seen it all — the magical, the emotional, and yes, the unexpected. One piece of advice I always share with my wedding couples is this:

Do everything in your power to minimise the nerves that will inevitably creep in on the morning of your wedding. Don’t sweat the small stuff — no one will notice how many steps you take up to the top of the aisle! And most importantly… be prepared.

The Wedding Morning S.O.S. Box

Let’s face it — the groomsmen are likely off golfing and definitely not stressing over the little details. So here’s a starting point for the bridal party: create an S.O.S. box — a curated kit of must-haves that can save the day when minor hiccups arise.

If I were getting married again, or lucky enough to be a bridesmaid once more, here’s what I’d include in my basket of calm:

Essentials

  • Paracetamol
  • Needle and thread
  • Plasters & blister pads
  • Sanitary products
  • Tissues (lots!)

Insect Repellent

Especially crucial for outdoor ceremonies surrounded by nature. Even if your venue provides it, bring your own. And don’t forget to apply it before your rehearsal too.

TIP: Mist from at least 20cm away — especially if you’re wearing fake tan — and let it fully dry before putting on your dress. Same goes for sun cream.

Baby Wipes

Inevitably, someone will smudge mascara or spill a drink. A quality baby wipe is a lifesaver — gentle on fabric and surprisingly effective.

Spare Earring Backs

Yes, really! You wouldn’t believe how often I’ve had panicked bridesmaids call after losing one mid-dress-up. A few spares in your kit = instant peace of mind.

Organic Chamomile Tea

Nerves can make you feel chilly or dampen your appetite. Skip the strong coffee and instead bring organic chamomile tea — soothing, gentle, and naturally calming. Don’t forget a tea strainer if it’s loose-leaf!

Hot Whiskey (For Emergencies Only!)

S.O.S. Kit

Only twice in my career did I need to break this out — both times, it worked wonders.

One bride woke up completely voiceless due to stress (not partying!). A hot whiskey in the morning and another an hour before the ceremony gave her voice back — in time to say her vows with full heart.

Ingredients:

  • 1 measure of Irish whiskey (Jamieson, of course!)
  • Half a lemon (1 good slice, rest squeezed)
  • Cloves (stick them into the lemon slice)
  • 1 tablespoon of quality honey
  • Hot water

And beyond these few tips, I wish you nothing but joy and laughter as you prep for your magical day. The wedding morning flies by — so savour every second.

Happy Wedding Day,
Em x
